What other ethnic groups found in Fiji?
In addition to the two major ethnic groups in Fiji, the iTaukei (indigenous Fijians) and the Indo-Fijians, there are several other ethnic groups present in the country. These include:
1. Rotumans: Rotumans are Polynesian people who originate from the island of Rotuma, located 465 kilometres to the north of Fiji. They make up around 1.1% of the population of Fiji and are known for their distinct culture, language, and traditions.
2. Chinese: Chinese people form a small but significant minority in Fiji. They first arrived in Fiji as indentured labourers in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Today, they are involved in various sectors, including business, trade, and retail.
3. Europeans: Europeans, primarily British and Irish, have a long history in Fiji. They were the first Europeans to settle in the country during the colonial era and left a lasting impact on Fijian society, laws, and governance. Currently, Europeans make up a small percentage of the population.
4. Other Pacific Islanders: Aside from Rotumans, there are smaller communities of other Pacific Islanders living in Fiji, including Tuvaluans, Kiribatians, Solomon Islanders, and Tongans.
Each of these ethnic groups brings its unique cultural heritage, traditions, and languages, contributing to the diverse and multicultural nature of Fijian society.
