1. Decide what kind of grapes you will need. Different wines are made from distinct varieties of grapes that are grown in particular areas.

2. Research the climate in which your grapes grow best. This will determine the general area in which to find a grower from whom to purchase the grapes.

3. Contact growers. In some states there are regions that grow many varieties. For example, California has the Napa Valley and the Temecula Valley, which both grow wine grapes. The Napa area is a moister climate and grows many varieties that do not do well in the hot, dry climate of Temecula.

4. Determine the cost of a bushel of grapes from different growers. Growers who have larger crops tend to charge lower prices for a bushel.

5. Purchase your grapes and arrange the transport. Negotiate the best deal you can. Remember that grapes need special handling and refrigeration during transit. This will cost you extra, so factor it into the total cost ahead of time.
