How to Siphon Wine
Unless you have siphon pump or a carboy cap, you're either going to get unfinished wine in your mouth or water in the container when you start the siphoning. A little unfinished wine in your mouth won't hurt you; it's just cloudy and partially fermented. A little filtered water in the container won't hurt the wine, either. You only need a siphon hose and clamp to move the wine from the primary fermentation bucket to the carboy.
Things You'll Need
- Siphon tube, 4 feet long
- Racking cane
- Hose clamp
- Funnel
Instructions
-
Set the fermentation bucket on a table or counter. Place the sterilized carboy or other vessel you will siphon into on a chair or surface 1 1/2 feet or more below the fermentation bucket.
-
Slide one end of the siphon hose over the bent end of the racking cane. Slide the hose clamp over the other end of the siphon hose, and position it about 6 inches up from the tip.
-
Insert a sterilized funnel in the clamp end of the siphon hose. Have a helper pour a slow stream of filtered water in the funnel until you see it run from the cane. Shut the hose clamp and take the funnel out.
-
Insert the racking cane in the fermentation bucket. Put the clamp end of the hose in the carboy and release the clamp. The siphon will start.
