What is wine mixing?
Wine mixing, or blending, is the practice of combining different wines to create a new wine with a desired taste and aroma profile. Blending has been used for centuries in wine production, and can be used to improve the quality and complexity of a wine, or to create a consistent style of wine from year to year.
Wines can be blended for various reasons, including:
- To improve the overall quality of a wine. Blending can help to balance the flavors and aromas of different wines, creating a more complex and harmonious wine.
- To create a consistent style of wine. Blending can help to ensure that a winery's wines have a consistent taste and aroma profile from year to year, regardless of the variations in grape quality and growing conditions.
- To create a specific type of wine. Blending can be used to create specific types of wines, such as red blends, white blends, and sparkling wines.
- To add complexity and depth. Blending different grape varietals, or wines made from different terroirs, can add complexity and depth to the final wine.
- To correct flaws. Blending can also be used to correct flaws in a wine, such as excessive acidity or tannins.
The process of blending wines involves carefully selecting the different wines to be blended and then combining them in the desired proportions. The proportions of each wine used in a blend will vary depending on the desired outcome. Once the wines have been blended, they are typically aged for a period of time to allow the flavors and aromas to meld together.
Blending is a complex and challenging process, but when done well, it can result in the creation of truly exceptional wines.
