Desserts to Pair With Cabernet Sauvignon Blend Wine

Pairing a Cabernet Sauvignon blend with dessert can be a tricky task. Despite Cabernet Sauvignon blend’s dominant characteristics, which often include blackcurrant, dark chocolate, and especially if blended with Merlot, black cherry, it is a dry wine, not sweet. Typically, when pairing wine and dessert, the wine should be sweeter than the dessert or it will taste extremely bitter. There are, however, a few dessert options that marry nicely with a Cabernet Sauvignon blend.

Cabernet Sauvignon Blends

  • Cabernet Sauvignon blends are quite popular in France, especially in the Bordeaux region, where Cabernet Sauvignon is always blended with other grapes, mostly Merlot. Bordeaux blends might also include other grapes, like Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The taste characteristics of a Cabernet Sauvignon blend depends on the different grapes thrown in the mix. It is possible to taste one or more of the following in a Cabernet Sauvignon blend: blackberry, black cherry, black currant, coffee, chocolate, cedar, raspberry, herbs and plum.

Dark Chocolate-covered Walnuts

  • A piece of dark chocolate can nicely complement a Cabernet Sauvignon blend, especially one that contains Merlot since both Cabernet and Merlot often leave hints of dark chocolate on the palette. Just make sure it is dark chocolate, not milk chocolate. In fact, the darker, the better. Milk chocolate and a Cabernet Sauvignon blend make a terrible combination because it is too sweet. Aim for a piece of dark chocolate that has a bitter taste to it. This will soften the wine a bit. Walnuts also go hand-in-hand with Cabernet Sauvignon, so perhaps try a dark chocolate-covered walnut.

Plums and Black Cherries

  • Certain types of fruit also go well with Cabernet Sauvignon blends. Plums are a great dessert option for both Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot on their own. So, naturally, they will make great dessert companions for Cabernet Sauvignon blends, which usually have a decent amount of Merlot in the mix. Black cherries also pair nicely with Cabernet Sauvignon blends. In addition, since dark chocolate is a great match, perhaps try dark chocolate-covered black cherries.

Cheese-Plate Pairings

  • Serving a cheese plate for dessert is commonplace in Europe, and when paired with wine, certain cheeses truly make surprisingly delicious dessert options. Aged cheddar goes well with either Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot, which means it will work well with Cabernet Sauvignon blends, too. A Cabernet Sauvignon blend has a decent amount of Merlot in it, try pairing it with Parmesan or Romano cheese. When serving cheese for dessert, make sure it is at room temperature; this will help enhance the flavor.
