Why is coke made?
Coke refers to a solid fuel with high carbon content and few impurities, derived from coal, petroleum or vegetable matter through pyrolysis. Its production intends to achieve different purposes.
1. Steelmaking:
* Coke's primary use is in blast furnaces for ironmaking.
* Coke combines with iron ore and quicklime to produce molten iron.
* Carbon in coke acts as a reducing agent, removing oxygen from the ore and converting it to pure iron.
2. Industrial Fuel:
* Coke is used as fuel in various industries heating purposes, such as lime and cement kilns, glass and ceramics manufacturing.
3. Chemical Feedstock:
* Coal-based coke can be further processed to produce other valuable chemicals, including benzene, toluene, xylene, etc., used in petrochemical industries.
4. Household Applications:
* In the past, coke was widely used as a domestic fuel for cooking, heating homes, and stoves.
* Modern use of coke is less common in domestic settings due to alternative fuels like natural gas, electricity, etc.
5. Activated Coke:
* Activated coke, made from petroleum or vegetable sources, is used for gas purification and adsorption applications, such as in water purification filters, gas masks, and catalysis processes.
