Why do clams close their shell when removed from its watery environment?
Clams shut their shells as a means of defense by retracting their foot from a water jet in their system used for clinging onto rocks. Additionally, they also close shells to limit water loss when exposed to air, preventing them from dehydrating during prolonged periods.
