How to Boil Shrimp in Beer

Boiling shrimp in beer adds flavor to the seafood. The darker the beer, the more robust the flavor. A common misconception is that the alcohol will evaporate, or burn off, during the cooking process. While some of it will evaporate, not all the alcohol will boil out of the beer, so if that is a concern, substitute chicken broth, ginger ale, white grape juice, mushroom broth or nonalcoholic beer, being aware it will alter the flavor slightly.

Things You'll Need

  • Beer
  • Large pot with lid
  • 2 tbsp. shrimp boil, Creole or Cajun seasoning
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1 tsp. pepper
  • Lime
  • 24 oz. shrimp, head and shell left on
  • Slotted spoon
  • Serving bowls

Instructions

  1. Pour 36 oz. of beer in a large pot along with water and 2 tbsp. of your favorite shrimp boil, Creole or Cajun seasoning, salt and pepper. Juice one lime and put the halves of the lime into the pot. Cover the pot and boil for 10 minutes on medium-high heat.

  2. Rinse the shrimp well. Put the shrimp in the large pot with the seasonings. Put the cover back on and turn off the heat.

  3. Check the shrimp after three minutes. It should be pinkish in color. If not, return the cover to the pot and check every minute until the color is pinkish.

  4. Use a slotted spoon to remove the shrimp from the pot. Place it in serving bowls.
