How to Make a Citrus Glaze for Shrimp

Add a punch of flavor and a picturesque shimmer to your shrimp by basting it with a tasty citrus glaze while you're cooking. The citrus in the glaze complements the flavor of the shrimp and the sugars in the mix become lightly caramelized during the cooking process, which adds texture and flavor without adding tons of calories or fat. As a bonus, glazes can be prepared quickly using a variety of ingredients. This also allows you to change up the flavor profile of your dish with minimal effort while complementing the slightly sweet flavor of the shrimp and pleasing your palate.

Instructions

  1. Combine citrus juice, herbs and any aromatics that you're using in a medium saucepan. Use a single type of citrus juice, or a combination or sweet and tart juices such as grapefruit, orange, lime and lemon. Add fresh garlic and ginger for a slightly Asian flair or jalapeno pepper and minced cilantro for a south-of-the-border flavor.

  2. Place the saucepan on the stove and bring it to a boil over medium-high or high heat. Let it simmer for roughly 10 minutes or until the glaze is reduced and slightly thickened.

  3. Add additional ingredients, if you're using them, such as chili sauce, fish sauce, corn or maple syrup, salt and pepper. Stir the glaze to combine the ingredients and taste the mixture.

  4. Adjust any of the ingredients if necessary. If the glaze isn't sufficiently tangy, add more lemon or lime juice. If it is too tangy, add a little sugar and continue cooking it until the sugar is dissolved.

  5. Set the saucepan aside. Baste one side of the shrimp before placing it on a preheated grill or under the broiler. Cook the shrimp for approximately three to four minutes.

  6. Flip the shrimp halfway through the cooking time and baste the other side with the glaze. Once the shrimp's flesh is firm and opaque, it is fully cooked and ready to serve. Add additional glaze, or serve it on the side if desired.
