Mesquite wood is safe to burn in a fireplace but is not commonly used. Mesquite burns at extremely high temperatures, so only a small amount should be burned to avoid cracking it's heat to damage the chimney or fireplace surround. It also produces high levels of creosote and smoke than other hard woods like maple, pecan, cherry etc.
Mesquite Wood:
- Hard/Dense-Burns Hot;
- Aromatic Smell (Smoked Meats etc);
- Splinters Pop and Spark;
- High in Creosote (Frequent cleaning);
- Best burned with other harder/heavier logs to balance burn.
