How to Bake Whole Fish in Foil

Baking a whole fish in foil is a method that is fairly difficult to mess up. The foil keeps the fish moist and helps to baste it in its own juices. Recipes in this style often ask for the addition of ginger and soy sauce, or white wine and lemon juice. All of these work well. The tin foil traps these flavors in the pouch and helps concentrate the flavors.

Things You'll Need

  • Whole fish, cleaned and scale.
  • Tinfoil
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Olive oil or butter
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce

Instructions

  1. Place tinfoil flat on the table. Rub olive oil or butter on the surface. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F.

  2. Season fish with salt and pepper. Lay fish flat on the foil. Coat with a small amount of olive oil or butter. Drizzle soy sauce on top of fish.

  3. Fold tinfoil over fish. Start near the top fin then fold over the belly. Fold the ends over the head and tail.

  4. Place in preheated oven. Bake for 15 minutes for each inch of thickness.
