Baking Spicy Haddock (6 Steps)

Add some spice to your dinner routine by serving a simple, yet flavorful, spicy baked haddock as your main dish. Haddock, which has firm but flaky, bright-white, delicate flesh, is ideal for use in a variety of fish recipes, including those that pack a punch in the flavor department. Although you can change the recipe in a number of ways by using different ingredients and differing ratios of those ingredients, a spicy baked haddock is a delicious entree for your dinner table.

Things You'll Need

  • Baking dish
  • Non-stick spray, butter or cooking oil
  • Dry seasonings: salt, pepper, garlic powder, paprika, chili powder, cayenne pepper
  • Butter or oil
  • Fresh seasonings: minced chili peppers, onions, ginger, garlic, parsley, cilantro
  • Flour
  • Wine, broth or milk
  • Bread crumbs or another topping
  • Herbs

Instructions

  1. Set your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit to preheat. While the oven is preheating, grease a baking dish with non-stick cooking spray, butter or cooking oil.

  2. Place fresh haddock fillets or thawed frozen haddock in a greased baking dish, after cutting them into serving-sized pieces if desired.

  3. Sprinkle the haddock with your choice of seasonings, such as salt and pepper, garlic powder, paprika, chili powder or a dash of cayenne pepper.

  4. Create a spicy sauce by melting butter or heating cooking oil in a small- or medium-sized saucepan. Saute fresh ingredients, such as minced chili peppers, onions, ginger or garlic until soft. Stir in a tablespoon or two of all-purpose flour if you want to thicken the sauce, stirring continually for a minute or two to make a roux before adding liquid such as wine, broth or milk. Add salt and black pepper, stirring the sauce until it is lightly thickened and bubbly.

  5. Pour the sauce over the fish, evenly coating each fillet before sprinkling the dish with buttered bread crumbs, crushed crackers or panko to give the fish a crunchy topping.

  6. Bake your haddock at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 20 to 35 minutes, or until the fish is opaque and flakes easily when tested with a fork. Sprinkle fresh herbs such as chopped parsley or cilantro on top of the fish before serving.
