Prophet Muhammad did not write the Qur'an. According to Islamic tradition, the Qur'an was revealed to Muhammad by the angel Gabriel over a period of approximately 23 years, beginning in 610 CE. Muslims believe that the Qur'an is the literal word of God, and that Muhammad was a messenger who was chosen to transmit the message to humanity.
