How to Make Spiders Out of Oreos

Spiders made out of Oreos make the dessert spread extra creepy, whether you make them for a Halloween party or a party for the arachnid lover in your life. The round dark cookie creates the spider's body, while the cream filling lends itself to inserting eight tiny legs. The effect is especially menacing with seasonal Oreos that have orange or red cream filling, but you can remove and tint white filling with food coloring.

Crawly Legs

  • Thin strands of licorice rope candy in any color can be used for the spider's legs. Cut the licorice with scissors to make eight legs roughly 2 inches long. Push four legs firmly into the cream filling on each side of the Oreo. If you have trouble pushing into the filling, take the Oreos apart, arrange the legs over the cream filling and use a toothpick to embed them. Replace the other piece of the Oreo -- try some buttercream frosting as glue if they don't hold together well. Thin pretzel sticks work well as a substitute for licorice legs. Pretzels aren't pliable like licorice, so break the sticks in half and join them at an angle with a small ball of fondant or royal icing.

Creepy Eyes

  • Small, circular candy eyes complete the Oreo spider. Red candies make the spider extra spooky, but any other color may be used for a fun finish. Squeeze two dots of buttercream frosting or peanut butter on top of the cookie to use as glue for the eyes. Press one piece of candy on each dot and let it rest until the "glue" hardens. Other ocular options include small black and white candy eyes sold with cake decorating supplies or simply two small dots of white or colored frosting.
