The Benefits of Horsetail Tea

The horsetail plant, also known by such names as shavegrass or scouring rush, can be found in Asia, as well as in Europe and the United States. Its leaves can be made into tea, and drinking horsetail tea has many health benefits.

Edema

  • If you suffer from edema, a build up of fluid in the body that usually occurs in the legs, feet and ankles, drinking horsetail tea can help to flush fluids out of your system.

Fingernails

  • The tea's silica and mineral content can strengthen your fingernails (as well as your hair) if they are brittle or are have trouble growing.

Oral Agent

  • You can gargle with horsetail tea to soothe a sore throat, bleeding or irritated gums, or ulcers in your mouth.

Urine

  • The tea supports urinary tract health and improves the urine stream. It can relieve cystitis (which is when the bladder gets inflamed), ulcers and infections.

Compresses

  • A horsetail-tea soaked compress can be applied to cuts and burns to promote healing. It also will ease the pain of sprains, broken bones and arthritis-stiffened joints.

Diuretic

  • This tea is a diuretic, because it contains flavonoids, which promote the shedding of excess water. It is a good choice for women who bloat during their menstrual cycle.
