How to Make Kava Tea
Kava tea is a traditional drink from Polynesia, and according to Tea Benefits, the tea helps reduce stress and promote relaxation, soothe muscle tension, reduce pain and works as an anti-inflammatory in the body, helping ailments like bronchial congestion. Kava tea is made with ground kava root, which can be found in health food stores.
Things You'll Need
- Kettle
- 2 coffee mugs
- Food thermometer
- Kava tea (ground)
- Milk (coconut, soy or cow)
- Coffee strainer
Instructions
-
Heat one cup of water or milk in a kettle, allowing it to get hot but not boiling. Kava tea loses many of its benefits if the water gets over 140 degrees Fahrenheit and use a thermometer to ensure the water or milk stays below 140 degrees. The ideal temperature is 120 degrees to retain kava's health benefits. Pour the liquid into your mug.
-
Add 1 tsp. of ground kava root to the water or milk. Allow it to steep for 45 minutes if using water and 30 minutes if using milk.
-
Place a coffee strainer over the mouth of the other mug, and push it down slightly into the mug. Pour the kava tea over the strainer to remove the roots from the liquid.
-
Drink the kava tea. Limit yourself to only one cup a day, two or three times a week.
