How to Make Cold Brewed Tea (5 Steps)
Many people make iced tea by brewing a kettle of hot tea, letting it cool and pouring the tea over ice cubes. However, making iced tea using a cold brewing method alters its flavor and chemicals in a way that some tea drinkers find appealing. Cold brewing tea releases more antioxidants and less caffeine than a hot brewing method. It is easy to make cold brewed tea at home for a crisp, refreshing summer beverage.
Things You'll Need
- 6 tablespoons tea leaves
- Large glass jar
- 8 cups cold water
- Stainless steel mesh strainer
- Large container
- Coffee filter
Instructions
-
Choose a type of tea leaf to cold brew. Tea leaves must be heat processed to be safe for cold brewing. Green, white, black and oolong teas are appropriate to make cold brewed tea. Avoid cold brewing herbal or floral teas, which are usually not heat processed.
-
Place 6 tablespoons of tea leaves in a large glass jar. Fill the jar with 8 cups of cold water. Place a lid on the glass jar to seal it.
-
Put the jar in the refrigerator. Allow the tea to cold brew for at least eight hours.
-
Place a stainless steel mesh strainer over the mouth of a large container, such as a jar or bowl. Put a coffee filter in the strainer. Pour the cold brewed tea from the glass jar through the strainer to remove the tea leaves and other particles. Discard the sediment and transfer the cold brewed tea back into the glass jar for storage.
-
Serve the cold brewed tea over ice. Add sugar or honey to taste to sweeten the iced tea.
