What is a leter?

Leter is an extinct genus of small, herbivorous prehistoric mammal. It belonged to the family Phenacodontidae, which was an extinct family of condylarths that inhabited North America, Europe and Asia during the Paleocene and Eocene epochs.

Leter was around the size of a dog. Like other phenacodonts, leter had sharp claws, a long tail and a coat of hair. It walked on the soles of its feet (plantigrade) and ate a diet of leaves, twigs, and fruits.

Leter is known from the following species:

* Leter praecursor

* Leter maior

* Leter gracilis

Leter is an important genus in the study of the evolution of mammals because it provides evidence for the early evolution of herbivory and the transition from hoofed animals to hoofed mammals.
