How to Spice Up Hot Cocoa Mix (6 Steps)

Few things provide more classic comfort than a gently steaming cup of hot cocoa on a cold or difficult day. And sometimes a really great day simply calls for some rich chocolate celebration. But a sophisticated adult palate may not appreciate plain hot cocoa mix, and sometimes kids deserve an extra-special treat. Whatever your reason, take a few minutes to jazz up store-bought hot cocoa mix with one or several embellishments and add a decadent bit of sweetness to the day.

Things You'll Need

  • Milk
  • Whisk
  • Spices
  • Flavored extracts
  • Liqueurs
  • Whipped cream
  • Marshmallows
  • Crushed or shaved candies

Instructions

  1. Make your hot cocoa with milk instead of water. Heat the milk in a small saucepan over low heat until it starts to steam. Whisk in the cocoa powder until it dissolves.

  2. Add pumpkin pie spice, orange peel, instant espresso or ancho chili powder to hot cocoa mix for added flavor. Make small jars of flavored mixes reflecting your own taste ahead of time so that you have a selection close at hand.

  3. Sprinkle a few drops of vanilla, maple, peppermint or non-alcoholic rum extract in your hot cocoa after you whisk the mix into the milk. Use a light hand with concentrated extracts.

  4. Pour a healthy dollop of Amaretto, Frangelico, Creme de Cassis, brandy or other liqueur into your hot cocoa for a luscious adult treat.

  5. Pile whipped cream or marshmallows – or both – in the cup and serve the concoction with a spoon.

  6. Scatter crushed candies such as peppermint or butterscotch on top of the crowning dollop of whipped cream for a bit of crunch to complement the creamy sweetness.
