How do you age scotch?
Scotch, specifically Scotch whisky, is aged in oak barrels for a minimum of three years before it can be bottled and sold. The barrels are typically made from American oak, Spanish oak, or French oak. The type of oak used, as well as the size and shape of the barrel, can all affect the flavor of the whisky.
During aging, the whisky undergoes a number of changes. The oak barrels impart flavor and color to the whisky, while the alcohol evaporates over time. This process, known as "angel's share," can account for up to 2% of the whisky's volume per year.
The climate in which the whisky is aged also plays a role in its flavor. Scotland's cool, damp climate is ideal for aging Scotch whisky, as it allows the whisky to mature slowly and develop its full flavor.
Scotch whiskies can be aged for anywhere from three years to several decades. The longer a whisky is aged, the more complex and flavorful it becomes. However, it is important to note that there is no direct correlation between age and quality. Some whiskies may reach their peak flavor after a relatively short aging period, while others may benefit from longer aging.
The age of a Scotch whisky is typically stated on the bottle. However, it is also important to consider the other factors that contribute to a whisky's flavor, such as the type of oak used, the size and shape of the barrel, and the climate in which it was aged.
