What was once known as The Great National Temperance Beverage?
The Great National Temperance Beverage was once known as Coca-Cola.
Coca-Cola was originally marketed as a temperance drink, promoted as a healthy alternative to alcoholic beverages. It contained caffeine, but no alcohol, and was marketed as a "brain tonic" and a cure for headaches and other ailments.
This marketing strategy was successful for a time, but as Coca-Cola became more popular, its association with temperance faded. Today, Coca-Cola is known primarily as a soft drink.
