What is foetal alcohol syndrome?

Fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) is a group of birth defects that can occur in a child whose mother drank alcohol during pregnancy. These defects can include:

* Physical defects, such as a small head, short stature, and unusual facial features

* Mental disabilities, such as intellectual disability, learning disabilities, and problems with attention and behavior

* Problems with the heart, kidneys, and liver

* Vision and hearing problems

* Speech and language problems

FAS is the leading cause of preventable mental disability in the United States. It is estimated that 1 in 1,000 babies is born with FAS.

There is no safe amount of alcohol to drink during pregnancy. Even a small amount of alcohol can cause problems for your baby. If you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, it is important to avoid alcohol completely.

If you have any questions about drinking alcohol during pregnancy, talk to your doctor.
