How long is whiskey aged for?
Whiskey must be aged in new oak barrels for at minimum two years. According to the regulations, whiskey must be labeled according to the time spent aging in new oak barrels.
Here are the minimum aging requirements for different types of whiskey:
- Straight whiskey (bourbon, rye, wheat whiskey): 2 years
- Bottled in bond whiskey: 4 years
- Tennessee whiskey: 4 years
- Scotch whisky: 3 years
- Irish whiskey: 3 years
- Japanese whisky: 3 years
- Canadian whisky: 3 years
