How to Use a French-Press Mug

A French press is a device that uses a narrow cylinder and a plunger to extract the flavor of ground coffee. French presses come in several sizes and are usually manufactured from plastic, metal or glass. A more portable option is a French-press mug that allows the coffee lover to make a cup of coffee away from home. The mug works in the same fashion as a traditional French press, and can be used whenever coarse coffee grounds and water are available.

Things You'll Need

  • Coffee grounds
  • Boiling water
  • Spoon

Instructions

  1. Pour approximately 2 tsp. coffee grounds per 8 oz. water into the French-press mug.

  2. Boil tap water in a medium-sized pot. The amount of water required will depend upon the size of the French-press mug and the desired amount of coffee.

  3. Pour the boiling tap water into the French-press mug. Leave approximately 1-inch of space at the top for plunger room.

  4. Stir the contents of the mug with a spoon. This will lift any coffee grounds that have settled on the bottle of the mug.

  5. Set the mug's lid on top of the mug. The lid will contain the filter assembly and a long rod, or plunger. The plunger should be pulled upward until it is completely sticking out of the top of the lid.

  6. Allow the coffee to steep for 2 to 3 minutes.

  7. Press down on the plunger. The plunger should remain straight and a constant amount of pressure should be applied. This ensures that the grounds do not escape into the brewed coffee.
