How to Make a Glycol Chiller (4 Steps)

A glycol chiller is used to control the temperature of a fermenter in a brewery. The chiller is a refrigeration system that is used to cool an antifreeze called propylene glycol. This liquid is pumped through a circuit of tubing connected to the glycol chiller.

Things You'll Need

  • Copper tubing
  • Manifold
  • Bolts and nuts

Instructions

  1. Cut two pieces of copper tubing to equal lengths. The tubing needs to long enough to wrap around the fermenter and short enough to be able to place a manifold at each end.

  2. Space the tubing five inches apart and connect the ends to a copper-tubing manifold.

  3. Flatten the tubing to create more contact space with the fermenter. The more contact there is with the fermenter the more influence the glycol chiller will have on the temperature on the inside of the fermenter.

  4. Tighten the chiller to the fermenter using nuts and bolts.
