Desserts to Pair With Pale Ales

Pale ales are deep golden to amber in color and feature a strong, hoppy aroma and taste. Though there are a variety of beers that are considered pale ales they will commonly feature fruity, buttery, earthy and bitter flavors. The complexity of these beers makes them a good pairing with a variety of desserts. The malty, fruity flavors of pale ales tend to clash with chocolate so it is best to stay away from this type of dessert. However, they do pair deliciously with the flavors of caramel, cream, butterscotch and an array of fruit.

Types of Pale Ales

  • First brewed in England in 1642, pale ale is created using a pale colored malt and is warm-fermented or top-fermented meaning the yeast rises to the top of the brew in the fermenting process. Hops are added throughout the brewing process at many different stages, which gives this beer, it is robust, heavily malted, bitter undertones. The most common brews that fall under this category are; the English pale ale, American pale ale, India pale ale or IPA and the Imperial Double IPA, and according to Great Types of Beer’s History of Pale Ale, this brew was first called “pale” in reference to its lighter color.

Fruit Desserts With Pale Ale

  • Desserts with fruit such as a luscious apple pie or tart cherry pie will be highlighted by the sweetness of a traditional pale ale. Key lime pie would be another delicious choice to pair with this beer, especially if it has citrus notes. A flan rich with caramel would also be showcased well if paired with pale ales. The flavor of green apple merges beautifully with a fruity, slightly sweet pale ale so a baked apple served with vanilla ice cream would also be a winning combination paired with this brew.

Desserts With India Pale Ale

  • India pale ale is maltier and more robust than a traditional pale ale. Its deep, intense flavor works deliciously with a cheese plate that features pungent cheeses such as blue, Gorgonzola or really sharp cheddar. The complexity of the beer works well with sweet, gooey desserts that contain cinnamon or nutmeg. Pair this brew with apple cobbler that has a buttery crumb topping. Carrot cake with a rich cream cheese frosting would be delicious with a hoppy IPA, as the beer will balance the heaviness of the frosting, without overpowering the delicate flavors in the cake.

Rich, Creamy Desserts With Imperial

  • Imperial IPA features a brasher, hoppy taste, with a high alcohol content. The intensity of this beer stands up to bold, richer desserts. Pair this beer with cheesecake for a decadent combination. The heavy malt quality of this beer works really well with creme brulee. A rich bread pudding with spices and raisins is another decadent match with this ale. Butterscotch pudding with whipped cream would pair deliciously with an imperial that has buttery notes.
