How to Add Chocolate to Vanilla Pudding (6 Steps)

Pudding is a creamy, thick dessert related to custard. According to food historians, this dessert style of pudding dates back to the Middle Ages. Just like today, custard or pudding was eaten alone or used to fill pies, tarts and pastries. Add chocolate to vanilla pudding using cocoa powder to make chocolate pudding and add to your variety of puddings.

Things You'll Need

  • 3 cups whole milk
  • 1/3 cup cornstarch
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa
  • 2 tbsp. butter
  • 1/4 tsp. salt - optional
  • 1 tbsp. vanilla extract
  • Double boiler or regular pot

Instructions

  1. Make the vanilla pudding. Mix 3 cups of milk, 1/3 cup of cornstarch, 1 cup of sugar, and ¼ tsp. of salt together.

  2. Add cocoa powder to make chocolate pudding. Add 1/3 cup of unsweetened cocoa to the mixture.

  3. Stir over medium heat until the mixture begins to boil.

  4. Whisk for one minute on low heat.

  5. Remove from heat and stir in 2 tbsp. of butter and 1 tsp. of vanilla extract.

  6. Place a layer of plastic wrap over the chocolate pudding and refrigerate for 3 hours before serving.
