How to Make Chocolate Caramel Candy Turtles
Chocolate candy with caramel and pecans is frequently called a "turtle." The pieces of candy are called this because their humped shape and pieces of pecan stick out like legs, making the candy resemble a turtle.
Nestle candy company originally trademarked the brand name "Turtles," however the trademark was sold to DeMet's Candy in 2007.
While traditionally made from pecans, turtle candy is also made from macadamia nuts, hazelnuts and walnuts.
Things You'll Need
- 36 Pecans (halves)
- 1/2 cup semi-sweet chocolate, chopped (or chocolate chips)
- 12 pieces caramel, individually wrapped
- Parchment paper
- Oven
- Cookie/baking sheet
- Microwave-safe mixing bowl
- Microwave
- Large spoon
Instructions
-
Preheat oven to 300 degrees F.
-
Unwrap caramels. Place one sheet of parchment paper on cookie sheet. (Ensure that you use parchment paper and not waxed paper, as waxed paper melts.)
-
Place three pecan pieces close together on a cookie sheet. Place 1 caramel on top of the pecans. Leave 2 to 3 inches between each set of three pecans and repeat using the additional pecan halves and caramels. You should have 12 groups of pecans/caramel.
-
Bake pecans/caramels in oven for 8 to 10 minutes. Caramel should be melted. Remove from oven.
-
Melt the chocolate chips in the microwave on high, while caramel/pecans are in oven. Melt one to two minutes until chocolate is melted and smooth.
-
Place melted chocolate over pecan/caramel pieces, using large spoon. Each set of pecans/caramel should be covered in chocolate.
-
Chill in refrigerator overnight for a minimum of 8 to 10 hours.
