How to Buy Food-Grade Cocoa Butter
Cocoa butter is an integral part of chocolate. This fat is naturally present in the cacao bean, and gives chocolate its signature smooth texture. Cocoa butter is used for a variety of purposes aside from consumption, but buying food-grade cocoa butter is also an option.
Things You'll Need
- Air-tight container
Instructions
-
Buy cocoa butter at a well-stocked grocery or candy-making store. You can also purchase it online.
-
Examine the label to make sure it is 100 percent cocoa butter. Even if the product is used for cosmetic purposes, if the label indicates that only cocoa butter is included, it should be safe for use in cooking. (See Reference 1.)
-
Order cocoa butter shipped with an ice pack or during the winter months. Cocoa butter's low melting point--just below body temperature--means that it could melt if shipped during the heat of summer. (See Reference 1.)
-
Store cocoa butter in an air-tight container in a cool, dark place after opening. If the temperature of the pantry can get above 90 degrees, store the cocoa butter in the refrigerator. (See Reference 3.)
