How to Dry Cake Balls on a Stick (6 Steps)
When they dry to a smooth, glossy finish, cake balls on a stick -- also known as cake pops -- look like they came straight from the trendiest baker in town. However, it can be difficult to neatly dry cake balls. Simply placing them on waxed paper often results in an uneven coating and malformed treats. A couple of simple procedures help make smooth, shiny cake balls that are perfectly round or have flat, even tops.
Things You'll Need
- Block of polystyrene foam
- Awl or small sharp knife
- Candy melts
- Waxed paper
Well-Rounded Cake Balls
-
Protect round cake balls during the finishing process by drying them upright on sticks. Before dipping the cake balls, poke 1/4-inch-deep holes in a block of polystyrene foam, approximately 2 inches apart, with an awl or the tip of a sharp knife.
-
Dip each cake ball in the melted coating, and let the excess drip off for five to 10 seconds, or until the coating has set up enough so it's no longer runny.
-
Poke the clean end of the stick into one of the holes in the foam. Allow the cake balls to dry for approximately one hour before serving or wrapping them in clear, decorative candy bags.
Flatten the Learning Curve
-
Spread out a sheet of waxed paper on your work area. Cover the paper with candy melts placed approximately 2 inches apart, flat side down.
-
Dip each cake ball in the melted coating, letting the excess drip off for approximately two seconds. Immediately center the cake ball over one of the candy melts, pushing down gently with the stick. The melted coating flows over the sides of the candy melt, securing the cake ball to it.
-
Allow the cake balls to dry for approximately an hour before lifting them off the waxed paper and serving.
