How to Crush Ginger Root (4 Steps)
Ginger root refers to the underground root structure from which the ginger plant grows. It is edible and used in many recipes, and is typically grated before adding to a dish. However, some recipes, such as teas or soups, may call for the ginger to be crushed, not grated. Fortunately, crushing ginger is easy to do without the need for a special tool.
Things You'll Need
- Sharp knife
- Closable storage bag
- Spoon or butter knife
- Cutting board
- Wax paper or aluminum foil
- Wooden mallet or rolling pin
- Mortar or pestle
Instructions
-
Cut the amount of ginger root you need and save the rest for later. Store ginger root in a sealable storage bag in the refrigerator for up to three or four weeks. For longer storage, keep the ginger in the freezer.
-
Peel the skin of the piece you need with vegetable peeler, or scrape the peel off with a spoon or butter knife.
-
Cut the ginger into tiny pieces - approximately 1/4- to 1/2-inch pieces will suffice. This makes crushing the ginger easier.
-
Place the ginger on a cutting board, and place a piece of wax paper or aluminum foil on top of the ginger. Crush the ginger pieces with the side of a wooden mallet. You can also use a rolling pin to roll over the pieces to crush them. A mortar or pestle also works, but likely will require a bit more work.
