What Can I Use in Place of Sour Cream?
Whether you've run out of sour cream or are looking for a healthier or cheaper alternative, there are plenty of other options that can substitute for the taste and texture of sour cream whether you're cooking, baking or just want a low-fat replacement.
Plain Non-fat Yogurt
-
Plain, non-fat yogurt can replace sour cream in dips, dressings or as a garnish. For a thicker texture, strain the yogurt in cheesecloth or use plain Greek yogurt.
Cottage Cheese
-
To replace one cup of sour cream in a recipe, blend together one cup of cottage cheese and two tablespoons each of lemon juice and milk.
Creme Fraiche
-
Creme fraiche has a similar texture and consistency to sour cream, and it will not curdle when it is boiled. Substitute creme fraiche for sour cream in sauces, dips, dressings or desserts.
Buttermilk
-
Substitute one cup buttermilk for one cup of sour cream, or for a thicker consistency, combine seven-eighths cup buttermilk with three tablespoons butter or margarine.
