How to Tell Good Blueberries (3 Steps)
A round, fat blueberry is the essence of summer -- mix a few in a tall glass of lemonade or sprinkle a handful over homemade vanilla ice cream and you have a simple fruity treat. Before you consume these plump berries, you should know when they are safe to consume. Green and unripe berries will have a foul taste and old, moldy berries will not only taste bad, they can make you ill. Learn what to look for when shopping for or picking blueberries.
Instructions
-
Look at the color of the blueberries.
These berries will have a dark purplish-blue hue with a chalky white exterior when ripe. Avoid choosing berries that have a green or brown color to them.
-
Feel the berries.
Good blueberries will be round, firm and give slightly when squeezed. Berries that have a slimy skin or mushy interior are over ripe and may not taste as sweet as ripe berries.
-
Examine the skin.
Fuzzy white or green covering portions of the berry is an indicator of bad berries. This mold can cause sickness if ingested. Avoid choosing berries covered in mold.
