How Much Broth From One Cube of Bouillon?

Flavorful broth makes a delicious base for soups, stews and sauces. When you don't have time to prepare your own broth or stock from scratch, bouillon cubes provide a convenient solution. These cubes, with their concentrated flavors, are simply dehydrated stock. Add boiling water to transform the bouillon cubes into broth.

Average Amount

  • You can get between 1 and 2 cups of broth from a cube of bouillon. If you're using a bouillon cube in a recipe that calls for stock or broth, dissolve the cube in 1 cup of water. This will give you the proper concentration of flavor for your recipe. If you simply want to drink the broth by itself or if you prefer to have a less concentrated, or less salty, flavor in your recipe, dissolve the cube in 2 cups of boiling water.

Adjusting for Taste

  • One of the benefits of a bouillon cube is that you can adjust the amount of water you add to suit your tastes. If you don't want a highly concentrated flavor, you can even add as much as 3 cups of water per cube. Be careful with adding another cube of bouillon to get a more concentrated flavor; because of the high salt content in most bouillon cubes, your dish will end up tasting very salty. If your recipe calls for salt and broth, reduce the amount of salt you add to your dish when you use a bouillon cube.

Types of Bouillon

  • Bouillon cubes are available in several different common flavors, including beef, chicken, fish and vegetable. You can even find low-sodium and gluten-free varieties, which are good to have on hand if you have dietary restrictions. Each type of bouillon cube typically requires the same amount of water to dissolve, but check your package to be sure.

Bouillon Uses

  • Bouillon cubes are extremely versatile. You can simply stir one into 2 cups of boiling water to enjoy a hot broth drink when you're feeling a bit under the weather. You can also use them in homemade soups. Choose a type of bouillon that complements your other ingredients: chicken bouillon for chicken noodle soup, beef bouillon for a beef stew, or vegetable bouillon for a vegetable soup. These bouillon cubes also transform plain grains into something special. Pop a cube into the water as you cook 4 servings of rice, quinoa or couscous.
