Do you have to plant an apple tree next another tree?
Most apple varieties require cross-pollination to produce fruit and therefore need a pollinator variety planted nearby, within 50-100 feet. Some varieties, known as self-fertile or self-fruitful, can produce fruit without another variety present, but even these trees benefit from having a pollinator nearby, and will often produce much better harvests when cross-pollinated.
