How to Prevent Rice From Sticking in a Rice Cooker

The starches in rice make it an extremely sticky food. It sticks to other grains of rice, anywhere it spills and to the inside of the pot on the rice cooker. Rice cookers that come with nonstick pots make cleanup easier, though the rice still may stick inside. Rice cookers without nonstick pots can leave a mess. It might be a little bit tricky, but the right techniques can help you deal with sticky rice and prevent the rice from sticking to the pot.

Instructions

  1. Wash your rice first. Rice has a starch coating to keep it from sticking to other grains before it is cooked, but the starch sticks when it gets wet, especially during the cooking process. If you rinse the rice in a bowl and drain the water until it runs clear before you put it in the cooker, the rice will cook more evenly and stick less to other grains and the inside of the cooker.

  2. Grease the inside of your rice cooker with cooking spray, vegetable oil or butter before adding the water and the rice.

  3. Allow your rice cooker to stay on on the warm setting for a few minutes after you scrape out any large amounts of leftover rice. Leave the lid open during this time. The bits of rice still in the rice cooker will dry out so it is easy to wipe out the cooking pot.

  4. Soak the pan in warm water, and within an hour use a sponge to wipe out any rice that has stuck.
