How to Use a Cast Iron Grill Pan (7 Steps)
For people who live in apartments and don`t have access to a barbecue or outdoor cooking area, cast-iron grill pans offer a viable alternative for making foods like hamburgers, hot dogs, steak and fish. It may not be quite the same as an actual barbecue, but it will still give your dinner that char-grilled flavor sought out by so many.
Things You'll Need
- Cast iron grill pan
- Vegetable oil
- Oven
- Dish soap
- Tough sponge
Seasoning the Pan
-
Coat the entire cooking surface of the pan in vegetable oil.
-
Bake the pan in an oven for about an hour.
-
Remove the pan from the oven, and give it a quick rinse in soapy water. Seasoning the pan correctly will create a non-stick surface and help prevent it from rusting.
Cooking with the Pan
-
Place the grill pan on the stove or over a flame to heat it up. If you are using a stove, make sure the temperature is set to high.
-
Use vegetable oil. Spread a thin layer of vegetable oil on the meat or food you are going to cook. This will help ensure that your spices stick to your food, and your food doesn't stick to the pan.
-
Allow the food to thoroughly cook. Don't try and turn things over before they are ready. If you let your food sit for a while, you will find the meat won't stick to the pan as readily and you can make restaurant style grill marks.
-
Clean the grill pan properly. In order to maintain a well seasoned pan, all you need to do is give it light scrub with a tough sponge and rinse with hot soapy water after using. Make sure to dry the pan immediately after washing in order to prevent it from rusting.
