What Is Rock Salt Used for?

Rock salt, also called halite, is mined and is the mineral form of table salt. The crystals are much larger than table salt and they may not be pure in that form. Rock salt can be edible, but the salt used for roads during the winter is not, as manufacturers often add chemicals to it. It is used to make ice cream, for baking and cooking, aquariums and bathing.

Ice Cream

  • Rock salt is used for making homemade ice cream. Rock salt is added to the ice in the ice cream maker. It makes the ice begin to melt, which makes the ice cream mixture inside freeze faster.

Baking and Cooking

  • Edible rock salt may be used in baking to provide seasoning to the food and to help with the baking process. It may also be used for pickling.

Winter Weather

  • Rock salt is used during the winter to melt ice and snow on roadways and sidewalks.

Aquariums

  • Rock salt may be added to aquariums for fish health.

Bathing

  • It is used in bath salts and may be added to aromatherapy bath oils.
