How to Make Garlic-Flavored Fries
For garlic lovers, garlic and French fries are a winning combination, adding a pungent zip of flavor. To make garlic fries, you first need to cook them whichever way you prefer -- baked or deep-fried. Baking is simple and will save you a few calories, while deep-frying is traditional and tends to make the fries crispier on the outside. Once cooked, you only need to toss them with garlic sauteed in butter or oil before serving. Add chopped parsley and shredded Parmesan cheese to give the fries another layer of flavor.
Things You'll Need
- Baking potatoes
- Potato peeler
- Cutting board
- Chef's knife
- Olive oil
- Salt
- Garlic, minced
- Parmesan cheese (optional)
- Parsley, chopped (optional)
Baked
-
Preheat the oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Peel baking potatoes and slice them lengthwise, 1/4 inch thick, using a clean cutting board and sharp chef's knife. Cut each slice lengthwise into fries that are 1/4 inch thick.
-
Place the fries into a large bowl and season with salt to taste. Add a drizzle of olive oil and toss to fully coat the potatoes.
-
Spread the fries in a single layer onto a nonstick baking sheet. Place them into the oven and bake for about 50 minutes, until tender and golden brown. Turn the fries with a spatula after the first 20 minutes.
-
Combine a drizzle of olive oil or a few pats butter with a handful of minced garlic in a skillet. Cook over low heat for about 2 minutes, until the garlic aroma is strong.
-
Place the cooked French fries into a mixing bowl. Pour the garlic mixture over the top and toss to coat. Add chopped parsley and Parmesan cheese for more flavor, if desired. Serve hot.
Fried
-
Cut peeled potatoes into 1/4-inch thick fries on a clean cutting board. Place them into a bowl of water. Allow the fries to soak in the refrigerator for at least one hour.
-
Fill a deep pot halfway with peanut oil. Heat the oil to 325 F. Drain the potato strips from the water and pat them dry as thoroughly as possible, using paper towels.
-
Add the fries to the hot oil in batches so as not to overcrowd the pot. Cook the French fries for about 3 to 4 minutes, turning them a few times in the oil. Remove them from the hot oil, using a mesh skimmer or slotted spoon. Spread the French fries onto a shallow tray lined with paper towels. The potatoes will look rather limp and pale.
-
Raise the heat of the oil to 375 F and return the fries to the hot oil in batches. Cook for another 3 to 4 minutes, or until they are golden brown. Drain the fries on fresh paper towels. Place them into a large mixing bowl.
-
Heat butter or olive oil and minced garlic in a pan for about 2 minutes until the garlic is fragrant. Pour the mixture over the fries and toss to coat. Season with salt. Add Parmesan cheese and chopped parsley to taste, if desired.
