What effect does baking soda and vinegar have on ice?
Baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) and vinegar (acetic acid) react to produce carbon dioxide gas. This gas causes ice to foam and fizz. At first, the ice absorbs the carbon dioxide and remains in the liquid state (with dissolved gas). As more gas is produced, the liquid can hold no more gas and suddenly freezes, forming a solid foam of ice.
