How to Cut Steel Cut Oats
Steel cut oats, or also known as Irish oats, are whole grain oat groats that are steel cut into smaller pieces that resemble brown rice. Unlike rolled oats, which are steamed and flattened, steel cut oats are minimally processed and higher in fiber and nutrients. Steel cut oats also have a lower glycemic index than instant oatmeal. Some health food store sell whole grain oat groats in the bulk bins, and using basic kitchen tools, you can make your own steel cut oats.
Things You'll Need
- Oat groats
- Food processor or blender
Instructions
-
Buy whole grain oat groats from your local health food store in the bulk bin section.
-
Pour 1 cup of oat groats into a food processor or a blender at a time. Use the large steel blade if you are using a food processor.
-
Turn on for a few seconds until the groats are just cut two or three times. If you process for too long, it will become a powder.
-
Cook your steel cut oats as you would with the store bought kind.
