  • 1-1/2 tbsp. salt

Instructions

  1. Combine the yeast and a 1/4 cup of sugar in a bowl. Add the water and leave until it bubbles, about three to five minutes.

  2. Combine 1 cup of sugar, the flour, the shortening and the salt in a mixing bowl. Mix the ingredients together with your hands. Make a well in the center of the ingredients. Add the yeast mixture and combine with the dough.

  3. Remove the dough and place it on a slightly floured surface. Knead the dough until it feels smooth and elastic.

  4. Place the dough back in the mixing bowl and cover with a towel. Allow the dough to rise for three to four hours.

  5. Punch the dough down and knead it lightly. Cover again and let rise for 30 minutes.

  6. Divide the dough into oiled bread pans. Cover with towels and place in a warm area. Allow the dough to rise until it doubles in size.

  7. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Bake the loaves for 45 minutes to an hour.
