How did the Hershey company get started?
Milton S. Hershey was born in 1857 in Derry Church, Pennsylvania. He began his career in the candy business at the age of 18, working for a local confectioner. In 1886, he opened his own candy shop in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. The business was successful, and Hershey soon began to expand his operations.
In 1894, Hershey moved his company to Derry Church and built a new factory. He also began to experiment with new candy-making techniques. In 1900, he developed a process for mass-producing chocolate bars, which revolutionized the candy industry.
Hershey's chocolate bars quickly became popular, and the company grew rapidly. In 1905, Hershey incorporated his company as the Hershey Chocolate Company. The company continued to expand, and by 1918, it was the largest chocolate manufacturer in the United States.
In addition to his success in the candy business, Hershey was also a philanthropist. He donated money to build schools, hospitals, and other public buildings in Derry Church. He also established the Milton Hershey School for Boys, which provides a free education to disadvantaged boys.
Milton S. Hershey died in 1945 at the age of 88. He is considered one of the most successful entrepreneurs in American history. His legacy continues through the Hershey Chocolate Company, which is still one of the world's largest chocolate manufacturers.
