How to Make Cookie Press Cheese Straws
Cheese straws are versatile enough to enjoy as an casual snack or to serve as an appetizer at an elegant dinner party. While you can simple roll out your cheese dough and cut it into long strips, using a cookie press allows you to create a cylinder of dough which adds to the presentation of your cheese straws. Once you master the basic recipe and technique, try experimenting with different cookie press discs to create new and interesting shapes.
Things You'll Need
- 1 pound of cheese
- Cheese grater
- Medium size mixing bowl
- 1 stick of butter
- 2 tsp. Worcestershire sauce
- 1 1/2 cups of all purpose flour
- 1/2 tsp. of salt
- 1 tsp. of seasoning, optional
- Cookie press
- Small star disk
- Cookie sheet
Instructions
-
Shred 1 pound of cheese with a cheese grater into a medium size mixing bowl. Use a firm cheese such as cheddar or Swiss for best results.
-
Melt one stick of butter in your microwave on high power for approximately one minute.
-
Add the melted butter, Worcestershire sauce, flour and salt to the bowl of shredded cheese.
-
Add 1 tsp. of seasoning, if desired. You can use paprika, cayenne pepper, garlic powder or any type of seasoning you like.
-
Mix all of the ingredients together with your clean hands until it resembles bread dough.
-
Attach the small star disk to your cookie press. This disk has a star shaped cutout.
-
Shape your cheese dough into a cylinder and insert it into the cookie press.
-
Hold your cookie press at a 45 degree angle to an ungreased cookie sheet and press the trigger repeatedly as you move the cookie press slowly from one end of the cookie sheet to the other. This will create a long tube or straw of the cheese dough on the cookie sheet. Continue to form cheese straws on the baking sheet until you run out of dough.
-
Bake the cheese straws at 375 degrees F for approximately 10 minutes. The straws are done when the edges are lightly brown.
